Closed Projects

Below a list of the most important European projects in which the HEHS Center participated and coordinated.

Assessment and mitigation of nano-enabled product risks on human and environmental health: Development of new strategies and creation of a digital guidance tool for nanotech industries

Role: Coordination and management; release assessment of nanomaterials from nano-enabled products along their life cycle, in vitro and in vivo ecotoxicological and toxicological assessment of nanomaterials (coated and uncoated NM) and exposure relevant NM (released NM along the nanoproduct life cycle), hazard risk characterization for risk assessment and participating in the proposal and design of safer-by-design strategies for NM used in several industrial applications.

A common European approach to the regulatory testing of nanomaterials

Role: Contribute to the validation of characterization methods to make them suitable for their use for regulatory purposes, generate standard procedures to monitor exposure/releases of NM from nanoproducts along their life cycle, validation and standardization of in vitro models/tests for their use for regulatory purposes.

Biological Foundation for the Safety Classification of Engineered Nanomaterials (ENM): Systems Biology Approaches to Understand Interactions of ENM with Living Organisms and the Environment

Role: Release assessment of NM along their life cycle included in different commercial products, Impact assessment of NM included in conventional products along their life cycle, including the generation of novel hazard characterization factors for LCA of nanomaterials.

Colloidal Iron Oxide Nanoparticles or the REclamation of Toxic Metal Contaminated GROUNDwater Aquifers, Drinking Water Wells, and River Bank Filtrations

Role: Ecotoxicological evaluation of nanomaterials for ground wáter remediation, risk assessment and lifec cycle assessment

Innovative tool to improve risk assessment and promote the safe use of nanomaterials in the textile finishing industry

Role: Environmental risk assessment of nano-textiles and conventional finished textiles and proposal for updating REACH and other environmental EU policies.

Ceramic and polymeric membrane for heavy metal and drug water purification

Role: Environmental risk assessment of filtration membranes specifically made in the project for waste water treatments (in chemical and pharmaceutical wastes) applications, including ecotoxicity studies (aquatic and terrestrial compartments)

Development of a web based REACH Toolkit to support the chemical safety assessment of nanomaterials

Role: Provide innovative instruments to improve the implementation of REACH when manufacturing or handling materials or substances at the nanometer scale.

Safe Nano Worker Exposure Scenarios

Role: Development of risk assessment strategy to apply to the manipulation and exposure of nanomaterials during the synthesis and manufacturing processes, making use of the in vitro data generated in the project

Toxicological impact of nanomaterials derived from processing, weathering and recycling of polymer nanocomposites used in various industrial applications

Role: Coordination and management; release assessment of nanomaterials from nano-enabled products along their life cycle, in vitro and in vivo toxicological assessment of nanomaterials (coated and uncoated NM); physical-chemical characterization of pristine, functionalized and released nanomaterials
